Djokovic, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, avoided the fate of high seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, and he remains the last former Wimbledon winner in the men's portion of the bracket. "It is a bit strange that so many top players lost in one or two days, but as I said, it is a Grand Slam and all the lower-ranked players have an extra motivation to perform their best. They have nothing to lose," he said.

Williams won her 33rd straight match as she aims for a sixth Wimbledon singles crown. She'll next face Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, who, at 42 is the oldest woman in Wimbledon's third round since the open era began in 1969, according to BBC Sport. Williams lost just three points on serve in the first set, but Garcia made her work hard throughout. "I think Caroline's a really good player," Williams said, via BBC Sport. "I played her at the French Open, and she played really well, so it was good to get another win today. "I really love these moments when I'm out there. I live and die for these moments, and it's really fun." Also Thursday, American teenager Madison Keys beat 30th-seeded Mona Barthel of Germany 6-4, 6-2 to reach the third round in her Wimbledon debut. She'll face 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland next. Rain forces tourney to close Centre Court roof Showers caused the tournament's first rain delay, prompting officials to close the retractable Centre Court roof installed in 2009. Radwanska was beating Mathilde Johansson of France 6-1, 4-2 when the match was stopped to close the roof. After a half-hour delay, Radwanska closed out the second set, 6-3.

Serena Williams continues to be the dominant force in the WTA and her status as the favourite to win this year's Wimbledon title - if it was ever in doubt - has been strengthened by the unexpected exits of Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday. Serena Williams made a strong start to her campaign earlier in the week beating Mandy Minella 6-1 6-3, and should be ready for the challenge of Garcia. Serena Williams faced Caroline Garcia just a few weeks ago at the French Open. She took apart the young gun in straight sets in that clash, leaving the court as a 6-1 6-2 victor. Playing on grass is a different proposition entirely, but hardly a problematic one for the reigning Wimbledon and Olympic champion.

Credit is due to Caroline Garcia though. She's gone through qualifying and a tough first round clash against Jie Zheng without dropping a single set. She's clearly an adept player on the SW19 lawns and could well be capable of going a long way here at some point in her career. Following the result in Paris, and with Serena's outstanding form in mind, any prediction other than a Serena victory would be wild. Any talk of the surface being slippery doesn't necessarily hint towards an upset either. You only need to look back to the 2012 Madrid Masters and the controversial blue clay to see that Serena handles adverse conditions far better than most.

Maria Sharapova improved to 11-0 in first-round matches at Wimbledon by beating 37th-ranked Kristina Mladenovic of France 7-6 (5), 6-3 Monday.

But at 5-all in the tiebreaker, Sharapova hit a cross-court backhand winner to earn a set point, which she quickly converted with an over-the-shoulder backhand volley winner off Mladenovic's lob. Sharapova drew attention over the weekend by delivering a sharp news-conference rebuke to Williams over critical comments attributed to the top-seeded American in a recent magazine article. Williams has won their last 13 head-to-head matches, including the French Open final this month. Azarenka won the first set easily and was ahead 1-0 in the second when she slipped and fell. She was sobbing on the court and received treatment during an injury timeout. She played the rest of the match with a heavy wrap on her right knee.

Serena Williams took just 61 minutes to book her place in the fourth round of the French Open as she destroyed Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-2 at Roland Garros. The American world No 1 extended her winning streak to 27 matches with another excellent performance in Paris. Romanian Cirstea, the 26th seed, needed eight games and 33 minutes to make her mark on the scoreboard, a feat that was greeted by sympathetic cheers from the crowd. After her dismal start Cirstea even had two break points to lead 3-2 in the second set, but Williams simply stepped on the accelerator again to clinch the victory. Williams has dropped just six games in three matches as she goes in search of the 16th Grand Slam title of her career. The 31-year-old, who won her only French Open title in 2002, will now play Italy’s Roberta Vinci. Williams made it 70 wins from 73 macthes since her opening round defeat at Roland Garros last year and hopes she can ignore her winning streak for four more matches. She said: “I actually don’t think about it, and after every match I’m reminded. And, ironically enough, I forget about it as soon as it’s done. “I don’t think it’s about a winning streak.
